HISTORY

MB2B started in 1998 with a vision from Mr. Terrence Chase and Mr. Ray Schufford. The vision was to help adolescent boys mature into young men.  A cornerstone belief in developing MB2B is that African American males need additional support systems and personal attention to be successful early in life.  As a teacher, Mr. Chase felt that the boys in his school were not getting the attention they needed to succeed.  In the elementary school setting, the majority of teachers were females.  Most of the boys went home to single family homes with no male role model.  Mr. Chase took the initiative to talk to these boys about male issues.  They responded very well and began to ask questions and relied on him to be there for them.  This is how the mentoring program started.

The mentoring program started with 8 boys who met every Friday for weekly discussions.  Discussions include a multitude of subjects which resulted in a lot of interesting questions.  Some sessions also included tutoring.  Before long, we realized that we needed to be there for every aspect of their lives inclusive of their emotional, physical and spiritual needs.  As a result, we saw improvements in their standardize test scores.  Once a month we would do an activity with the mentees.  The activities would consist of community service projects, hanging out playing video games, basketball, and other sporting events.  The program was expanded to include guest speakers from various professions who spoke about their careers as well as life issues.  We wanted them to see that they could be more than the negative stereotypes of males often seen on TV and in their community.

As time went on enrollment continued to grow.  Funding for our programs came directly from Mr. Chase, Mr. Schufford and few others. The cost to fund the program was increasing, as such, a 501(c)3 non-profit status was sought during the fifth year to provide additional financial support.

FOUNDERS

Mr. Terrence Chase was born in New York City and later moved to Denver, Colorado during his adolescent years.  After graduating high school he went to college at University of Northern Colorado.  He went there to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics with an emphasis in Elementary Education.  After college he moved to Texas where he started teaching in 1998 in the Duncanville Independent School District.   Growing up in the Boy’s and Girl’s Club he always believed that children’s success are the key to a better society.  Mr. Chase feels that the more you put into your own and other people’s lives; the more you will get out of your own and other people’s lives.

Mr. Ray Schufford is a product of the greater Dallas area.  While growing up in the southern sector of Oak Cliff, he attended Dallas Independent School District for his grade school education.  He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Central Missouri. Serving others has never been a strange act for Mr. Schufford.  After college, he joined the Dallas Fire and Rescue Department to do just that. Mr. Schufford has always enjoyed helping people.  While using that as motivation, he and friend Mr. Chase, created Mentoring Brother 2 Brother.  Seeing a desperate need to teach young men how to become “men” made it evident that something had to be done.  Mr. Schufford feels that there is nothing more valuable than investing time in a young person.  “That same young person was me at some point in time and someone took time out to make sure I made it.”
